A youth-led project that integrates scientific knowledge, life stories, and local knowledge of female fishers to learn about mangroves, strengthen coastal communities, and generate conservation with a gender focus.

Mission

Guardianas del Estuario works hand in hand with women fishers, youth and coastal communities to generate scientific knowledge, strengthen local capacities and promote the conservation of estuarine ecosystems, making visible the participation of women in fishing and economic activities.

Impact

From the mangroves of the Guatemalan Pacific, Guardianas del Estuario has linked women fisherwomen, university students and allied organizations in processes of monitoring, training and exchange of knowledge, strengthening female leadership, generating scientific information and building networks for the conservation of estuarine ecosystems.
